Fort William is an excellent touring base. Places of interest include: the Great Glen, the Caledonian Canal with Neptune's staircase, Glenfinnan and of course Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. During the summer there is a steam train which runs between Fort William and Mallaig (the port for the ferry to Skye).
